Calling laws
California: AI-voice rule for autodialed calls added
Added California Public Utilities Code 2874 (AB 2905, in force since January 1, 2025): a call that plays a prerecorded message from an automatic dialing‑announcing device must first have a live announcement that, among other things, says if the message uses a voice generated or significantly altered by AI.
Corrections
Retell AI: what its $0.07 rate covers
Our comparison pages said Retell AI’s $0.07-a-minute rate includes the AI model and the voice. Retell builds the price from separate charges: $0.055 a minute for its voice infrastructure plus the model and voice you choose, so $0.07 is the total with the lowest-priced options and others cost more. Phone minutes through Retell are extra. The pages now say so.
Colorado: AI disclosure rule replaced
Our table listed Colorado’s SB 24-205 duty to tell consumers they are interacting with an AI system, with a June 30, 2026 start date marked unconfirmed. SB 26-189, signed May 14, 2026, repealed and re-enacted that part of the law to cover only automated decision-making technology used in consequential decisions, so the general duty no longer applies. The Colorado row now covers HB 26-1263, signed May 29, 2026, which requires conversational AI services to say they are AI from January 1, 2027 and excludes customer service software.
